The Philadelphia Flyers declared they were entering a New Era of Orange this offseason with Daniel Briere and Keith Jones taking over. There’s been a renewed sense of hope around the team, thanks mainly in part to the selection of Matvei Michkov as the seventh overall pick in June’s draft.
Just over six weeks later, Michkov is already impressing over in Russia. While we’re still in the dog days of summer with training camp starting next month, the KHL’s preseason is underway and Michkov has stolen the show.
Last week, we highlighted Michkov showing off in his first preseason game of the year. This week, Michkov continued that with a few dazzling moves.
On Thursday, Michkov led SKA St. Petersburg to first place in the 3x3XHL tournament. The tournament had a less-serious feel to it as it was 3-on-3 and in the preseason, but Michkov continued to strut his stuff.
Michkov was named the MVP of the tournament with two goals.

His first marker opened the scoring for SKA. Michkov was already well ahead of the play, as players are during 3-on-3, and made no mistake in finishing on the breakaway.

The Flyers have been searching for a scorer like this for years, and all signs point to him being worth the wait.
Michkov’s second goal was a thing of beauty. He maneuvered around one defender before stick-handling through another to go top shelf on the backhand.
OH BABY! HE'S ON HATTY WATCH 👀

The winger even got in on the action in his own zone with a defensive play that led to a rush the other way.

Michkov is going to be incredibly fun to watch over in Russia this season and the highlights are already getting started.
Yes, it’s a meaningless preseason tournament. Yes, it’s against not-so-great competition. And yes, Michkov can’t come over to Philadelphia until the 2026-27 season. But it sure feels good to have some hockey highlights to care about in August – and having some hope doesn’t hurt either.
