Flyers sign Samuel Ersson to two-year contract extension

How about a little bit of news to kick off your first weekend of August? The Flyers announced this morning that they’ve signed Samuel Ersson to a two-year contract extension, which will kick in for the 2024-25 season, and which will earn him $1.45 million per year.

Ersson is coming off of, by all accounts, a very successful season. He spent the bulk of the season down in the AHL with the Phantoms, where he put up a  2.84 GAA and .900 save percentage in 42 games played. When he finally got his call up to the Flyers, where he played 12 games, he also impressed there, putting up a .899 SV% and earning six wins in the process. The numbers here might not be absolutely jumping off the page, but they’re quite an accomplishment on a Phantoms team that tended to bleed a whole lot of chances, and a Flyers team that, well, we saw what they looked like.

The fact that this extension was signed so early – as we said, he still has one more year of his ELC left – speaks to how highly the organization views him, and their desire to have him locked in for the foreseeable future. And while it is a pay raise, it’s still a reasonable cap hit, and will keep him under RFA control even when he’s due for his next extension (and the Matvei Michkov window is opening up, if you will).

And as for what this means for the Carter Hart of it all, well, we’ll cross that bridge when we get to it. For now, we’ll leave it at a bit of housekeeping done now, and less to worry about next summer.
