Danny Briere is having himself a busy morning; after avoiding arbitration and locking up Selke-vote-getter Noah Cates for the next two years, the Flyers signed promising defenseman Cam York to a two-year, $3.2 million dollar contract.

Obviously we’d have liked to see Danny lock up a guy like Cam – young, clearly part of the rebuild, likely to improve his play moving forward – on a long-term deal, but one assumes that Cam and his agent know better. Waiting a couple of years for the cap to go up while working on a prove-it bridge deal opens up the possibility of a lucrative deal for York when this deal is up in two years.
York, 22 (1/5/01), tallied a career-high 20 points (2-18=20) in 54 games with Philadelphia and collected a career-high 13 points (3-10=13) in 20 games with Lehigh Valley of the American Hockey League (AHL) during the 2022-23 season. The 5-foot-11, 175-pound native of Anaheim, Calif., ranked third among Flyers defensemen in assists and T-4th in scoring. The left-shot blueliner notched his first career shorthanded point (assist) on Dec. 20 vs. Columbus and recorded a career-high three-game point streak (3a) from Dec. 31-Jan. 5. He owns 30 points (5-25=30) in 87 career NHL games with the Flyers in parts of three seasons (2020-23).
If Briere is able to find a stable partner for York heading into this season, expect those numbers to get even better.
