The Philadelphia Flyers will be sporting a new look for the 2023-24 season and it is a reference to the past while staying in the present.
Announced by the team on Tuesday morning, the Flyers will have brand new jerseys starting next season. Per the team’s release, this is to usher in a “New Era of Orange” and it is the first substantial changes the team has made to their jersey since 2010.

The sweaters are oozing with historical references that have made past Flyers jerseys stand out. Most notably, the burnt orange has taken over from the lighter shade of the modern uniforms. This shade is synonymous with the teams of the 80s and 90s and will be featured on both the home and away sweaters, while also appearing on both sets of socks. The socks!
The big and bold striping along the arms, has been widened for each player’s numbers to remain prominent. And with those numbers, they are going back to a single-color design, just as they were on the original Flyers uniforms in 1967.

As an homage to the 1982 jerseys, the large black bar at the bottom of the sweater has been moved down to create more fluidity. But this isn’t just combining a bunch of oldie uniforms, as the Flyers are keeping that bold name-plate design that they introduced in 2008 for this version.
It feels like a near-perfect mix of the new and old to give us a fresh look in Philadelphia this upcoming season.
“This New Era of Orange is all about honoring our franchise’s storied past while writing an exciting, new chapter of Flyers history,” said Daniel J. Hilferty, Comcast Spectacor Chairman & CEO and Governor of the Philadelphia Flyers, per the team’s release. “These new uniforms represent that sentiment perfectly with details to honor previous eras paired with a fresh, modern design. And there’s no better company than Independence Blue Cross to be our first jersey patch partner! It is an organization that has meant so much to me personally and the entire Philadelphia region.”

The one glaring difference that isn’t from the Flyers of old is the team revealing their first ever on-jersey patch advertisement. Starting next season, Philadelphia-based health insurance provider Independence Blue Cross will have its logo on the home sweaters for the Flyers.
Before this announcement, the Flyers were one of the few remaining NHL teams to not have a helmet or jersey sponsor and they have now opted with the patch on their sweater before marking up the helmets.
This new look no doubt lines up with the new direction the Flyers are heading towards. With more assertion than ever before, this team is going to be rebuilding and focusing on development over trying to win hockey games right now. So maybe the jersey will be associated with pain at first, but it is certainly something pretty to look at.
