The men’s tournament got underway yesterday with two fun games that ultimately had unsurprising end results. Today’s slate has four games on the table, including games that will see three Flyers play their first game of the tournament. Oh, and we’ll also see the first game for the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. You know it.
Yesterday’s Games
Sweden 4, Czech Republic 2 (Group C)
Quick Recap: Sweden absolutely jumped all over the Czechs early in the game, chasing surprise Czech goalie (and Flyers property) Jakub Kovar just a minute into the second period en route to a 4-0 lead. The Czechs were able to pick up two goals in the second period and improved as the game went on, but they didn’t quite have enough against what looked like a really strong Sweden team.
Flyer Watch: Jakub Voracek played 15:35 and put a team-high four shots on goal for the Czechs, though he was kept off of the scoresheet.
Switzerland 1, Latvia 0 (Group C)
Quick Recap: After getting the better of the action for almost the entire game, Switzerland scored the game’s lone goal with just eight seconds remaining in the contest to pick up the win. The Swiss team put 39 shots on Latvian goalie Edgars Masalskis, who turned away all of them except the very last one.
Flyer Watch: Mark Streit played 22:58 — the highest total of any player in the game — and picked up the only assist on the game’s only goal.
