This photo was taken on Monday morning on the I-95 side of the Wachovia Center. Don’t get used to calling it that, however, as clearly the Wells Fargo Center will be here pretty soon.
It looks like they might even be attaching the letters to the building today, what with the crane-looking device positioned next to the building where ‘Wachovia Center’ letters are currently on display. The official change isn’t supposed to happen until mid-to-late summer, however, so that might not be the case.
In the 14 year history of the building (that long, already?), it’s now seen four official names. Corestates Bank payed $40 million dollars for a 21 year contract on the naming rights. Corestates didn’t even last two more years, though, and when they merged with First Union Bank in 1998, the building affectionately became known as the F.U. Center, which many still call it today.
In 2001, Wachovia Bank purchased First Union and the name has been Wachovia Center for the last nine years. That all changes this summer, and with seven years left in the original naming rights contract, this may not be the last bank to put it’s name on the home of the Flyers.
It’s not the World F***in’ Champions, but it’s close. Meet the WFC.
