Carter Hart earned his first career shutout in the home opener against the New Jersey Devils.
It doesn’t get much sweeter than that. While the Excellence of Execution will, rightfully, get the majority of the praise for his blanking of Jersey to push the Philadelphia Flyers to their first 2-0-0 start since winning their first three to start the 2011-12 season, this was as complete a team win as I can remember.
Philly’s team defensive effort held the Devils to 25 shots on net, and only 20 through the first 50 minutes of the game. The Flyers killed five penalties, including a pair of 5-on-3’s, highlighted by Hart’s cross-crease sprawling glove save on a Taylor Hall one-timer that seemed ticketed for the twine.
Seven different Flyers recored points, including Kevin Hayes, who potted his first goal of the season to give the orange and black a 2-0 lead in 33 seconds into the third period.
The 2015 draft class lead the way, with both Travis Konecny and Ivan Provorov picking up a goal and an assist. The power play went 2-for-4, and the overall offensive pressure was stifling- the Flyers once again corsi-ed the hell out of their opponent, recording 64 shot attempts to NJ’s 43.
