Tom Sestito placed on waivers, likely headed to Adirondack Phantoms

Tom Sestito has been placed on waivers today according to TSN’s Bob McKenzie, and now we can officially say that he completely and single-handedly cost himself a shot at a job in this Philadelphia Flyers Training Camp.

He’ll likely be suspended for his hit on Rangers not-goalie Andre Deveaux (I’m too lazy to check what position he plays), and that’s what probably played into the decision to waive him. He’ll probably clear waivers and report to the Adirondack Phantoms.

Sestito was seemingly the front-runner to replace the suspended Jody Shelley in the Flyers lineup, at least for the start of the regular season. He was the only apparent heavyweight left in camp and, given his non-exempt waiver situation, seemed more likely than the waiver exempt Zac Rinaldo to stay with the big club.

But last night’s hit on Deveaux changed all that, and now Sestito is likely on his way north. Hey, at least he’s from upstate New York. Probably has some friends there or something.

For the record, Sestito does not have to clear re-entry waivers to return to the NHL based on his AHL salary. He earns less than $105,000 in the AHL, and thus is not subject to re-entry waivers. But we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it.
