An almost-daily look back at how the Philadelphia Flyers have fared on this day, recalling some of the more memorable moments, achievements, and events that shaped the organization throughout the club’s storied history
The Flyers have posted an 11-6-1-0 record in 18 all-time November 19 contests heading into tonight’s contest with the San Jose Sharks at the Wells Fargo Center.
Some of the more memorable November 19 moments in franchise history:
1967 — First period goals from Don Blackburn, Lou Angotti, and Ed Van Impe staked the Flyers to a 3-0 lead, and Philadelphia managed to hold off a third period charge in a 3-2 triumph over the St. Louis Blues at the Spectrum.
Philadelphia dominated the opening 40 minutes by outshooting the visitors by a 24-9 margin, and the score could have been more lopsided if not for the goaltending of Glenn Hall. The Hall-of-Famer held his team in until they could break through Bernie Parent, which they finally to do in the final frame when Ron Schock scored twice on the power play to make it a one-goal game. The second came with 3:48 remaining, but Parent slammed the door shut the rest of the way to seal the victory.
1970 — Jim Johnson posted his second career hat trick and added an assist, while Bernie Parent stopped 27 of 29 shots to lead the Flyers to a 6-2 drubbing of the California Golden Seals at the Spectrum.
Johnson scored all three goals within the first forty minutes, with two of them coming in the final seconds of the first and second periods.
Bobby Clarke, Serge Bernier, and Bill Lesuk (his first NHL goal) also hit the back of the net for Philadelphia, while Barry Ashbee and Bernier each added a pair of helpers.
1977 — Orest Kindrachuk scored two goals and assisted on another pair and Wayne Stephenson turned aside 22 shots as the Flyers blew out the Minnesota North Stars by a 7-2 count at the Met Center.
Don Saleski and Ross Lonsberry each chipped in with a goal and two helpers, while Bob Dailey, Mel Bridgman, and Barry Dean also beat Minnesota netminder Pete LoPresti in the win.
Goals from Dailey, Bridgman, and Kindrachuk staked the visitors to a 3-0 lead late in the middle stanza, but Tom Younghans got Minnesota on the board just 0:40 after Kindrachuk’s tally to make it a two-goal Philadelphia lead heading into the third period, where the Flyers jumped all over LoPresti.
The victory ran the club’s unbeaten streak to four games (2-0-2), and gave them a 6-1-3 mark over their last 10 outings.
Defenseman Kevin McCarthy added a pair of assists for Philly in the win .
1978 — Each member of the LCB Line scored during a three-goal first period, and Bernie Parent stopped 19 of 22 shots in a 4-3 victory over the Detroit Red Wings at the Spectrum.
Philadelphia’s top line accounted for seven points — Bobby Clarke with a goal and two assists, Bill Barber and Reggie Leach each posted a goal and one helper for a total of three goals and four assists — in the opening frame, as Philadelphia attacked Rogie Vachon and the Detroit net by a lopsided 15-4 shots on goal advantage.
Bob Dailey made it 4-1 in the first minute of the second period, but Andre St. Laurent and Dennis Polonich connected for Detroit in the next five minutes of play to cut the lead to one.
Parent was flawless the rest of the way in snapping a personal two-game losing skid.
1980 — Bill Barber posted a goal and two assists and Rick St. Croix turned away 30 of 31 shots as the Flyers drubbed the New York Rangers 5-1 at Madison Square Garden.
Brian Propp, Tom Gorence, Behn Wilson, and Rick MacLeish also beat Doug Soetaert, who finished with 21 saves.
Ron Greschner was the lone Ranger to solve St. Croix in the contest, spoiling the netminder’s shutout bid midway through regulation with a power play tally.
1985 — Tim Kerr and Ed Hospodar each scored a pair of goals, but Mike Bossy and Bryan Trottier each netted two of their own and added three assists apiece as the New York Islanders snapped the Flyers’ team-record 13-game winning streak with a wild 8-6 win over Philadelphia at Nassau County Coliseum.
Philadelphia scored four times with the man advantage and once while shorthanded, but found themselves playing catch-up for most of the contest after Hospodar had opened the scoring.
New York notched the next five, including a pair from Denis Potvin and Greg Gilbert within the span of just 0:09 in the first minute of the second period.
Ilkka Sinisalo and Rick Tocchet also scored for the Flyers, while defenseman Doug Crossman dished out a career-high four assists.
Goalie Darren Jensen stopped 29 of 36 shots in suffering his first defeat in four games since being recalled from the Hershey Bears following the tragic death of Pelle Lindbergh, in which he was pressed into starting duties when Bob Froese was placed on the shelf with a groin injury that occurred during practice over the long layoff before the club’s next game.
Kelly Hrudey yielded six goals on 37 shots to come away with the win.
1986 — Goals from Ron Sutter and Dave Brown staked Ron Hextall to a 2-0 lead at the second intermission, but Steve Thomas and Wendell Clark scored in the final frame — with Clark’s coming with just 1:25 remaining in regulation — to knot the game in a 2-2 deadlock for the Toronto Maple Leafs at Maple Leaf Gardens.
1987 — Peter Zezel scored twice and Brian Propp added a goal and three helpers to back a 26-save performance from Wendell Young in a 7-5 triumph over the Los Angeles Kings at the Spectrum.
First period strikes from Rick Tocchet, Dave Poulin, and Zezel gave Philly a 3-2 lead by the first intermission, and Zezel extended that to a two-goal advantage with his second of the contest just 1:44 into the middle session.
But sniper Bernie Nicholls got one back for Los Angeles only 12 ticks of the clock later, and defenseman Mark Hardy’s power play marker three minutes later knotted the game heading into the third period.
Lindsay Carson snapped the deadlock early in the final frame, before Propp gave the Flyers some breathing room midway through the stanza.
L.A.’s Paul Fenton beat Young for the second time in the contest less than two minutes later, but Ron Sutter beat Kings goalkeeper Rollie Melanson with just under three minutes remaining to seal the deal.
1988 — Tim Kerr and Pelle Eklund each scored a pair of goals, but Walt Poddubny and Michel Goulet notched early third period tallies to lift the Quebec Nordiques to a see-saw 6-5 win over the Flyers at Le Colisee.
Trailing 4-3 after one period, Mark Laforest was lifted in favor of Ron Hextall and Philadelphia received the second goals of the contest from both Eklund and Kerr to give the visitors a 5-4 edge heading into the final stanza.
Scott Mellanby scored the Flyers’ other goal, while Murray Craven and Mark Howe added a pair of assists apiece.
The pair of tallies gave Kerr 16 goals after just 21 games in a remarkable comeback season following multiple shoulder surgeries that cost the goal-scoring machine nearly the entirety of the 1987/88 NHL campaign.
1992 — Mark Recchi and Brent Fedyk each posted a goal and two assists as the Crazy Eights Line struck for eight points to back Dominic Roussel’s 22-save outing as the Flyers blasted Mike Richter and the New York Rangers 7-3 at the Spectrum.
Rod Brind’Amour also recorded a goal and three points, while Doug Evans notched his second two-goal game in the Orange-and-Black.
Rookie Eric Lindros scored once and added a helper, as the orange-hot Crazy Eights increased their production since being re-united to 18 goals and 25 assists for 43 points — Recchi 4 goals, 13 assists, 17 points; Fedyk 7 goals, 8 assists, 15 points; Lindros 7 goals, 4 assists, 11 points — over their last five contests.
1995 — Second-year defender Chris Therien made his first goal of the season a memorable one as he scored 0:32 into overtime to lift the Flyers to a 3-2 victory over the Vancouver Canucks at the Spectrum.
Goals by Pat Falloon — his first in his second game with the Flyers after being acquired in a trade from the San Jose Sharks three days earlier — and Anatoli Semenov gave Philadelphia a 2-1 lead at the second intermission, but Vancouver threw 16 shots in the direction of Ron Hextall in the final twenty minutes and knotted the game on an Alexander Mogilny goal early in the stanza.
Hextall — who entered the game with an NHL-best 1.75 goals-against average — was excellent in turning away 34 of 36 shots in the winning effort to run his regular season record to 7-1-1. Hexy had to come up big in the closing seconds of regulation, making a save on a 2-on-1 with 0:10 left as Vancouver nearly won the contest with a buzzer-beater to set up Therien’s OT heroics.
Semenov — whose earlier goal was assisted on by Therien — returned the favor by sending a pass from behind the Canucks’ cage to the Philadelphia defender, who snapped a wrist shot past Kirk McLean on the first shot by either club in the extra session to give the Flyers their third consecutive victory and fourth straight game without a loss (3-0-1)..
“I saw Anatoli coming out of the corner from behind the net with the puck, and I was open,” Therien said after the win. “I realized they had all collapsed low, so I thought maybe I’d get a quick shot off. And that’s what happened. It went in the net.”
2002 — Simon Gagne scored once and assisted on another Flyers’ marker and Roman Cechmanek made 17 saves in a 3-2 triumph over the Tampa Bay Lightning at the St. Pete Times Forum.
Jeremy Roenick and John LeClair also put the puck past Nikolai Khabibulin, who finished with 29 saves in the defeat.
Cechmanek had to be very good during the third period as Tampa outshot Philly by an 8-4 margin while nursing a one-goal lead.
2005 — Rookie Jeff Carter snapped a 3-3 tie early in the third period and Simon Gagne scored twice to increase his NHL-high goal total to 20 in a 6-3 decision over the Pittsburgh Penguins at Civic Arena.
The win gave Philly a league-best 10-1-1 road record.
Carter was able to find his own rebound and knock it home after Pens’ netminder Jocelyn Thibault lost sight of the puck along the goal line to give Philadelphia a lead they would not relinquish.
The Flyers also got goals from Mike Richards, Michal Handzus, and Mike Knuble in the victory, while the pair of markers gave Gagne a remarkable 20 goals and 31 points in the club’s first 19 games.
Rookie goaltender Antero Niittymaki stopped 27 of 30 Pittsburgh shots to improve his record to 4-1-1 for the season.
2011 — Scott Hartnell posted two goals and three points and Matt Read scored a pair of goals, but Bryan Little scored twice as the Winnipeg Jets built a 5-1 lead en route to a 6-4 win over the Flyers at MTS Centre in what would prove to be Chris Pronger’s last NHL game.
The big defenseman logged 26:41 and assisted on both of Hartnell’s power play markers, two nights after being sent head-first into the end boards on an unpenalized hit from behind by Martin Hanzal of the Phoenix Coyotes.
Pronger unknowingly sustained a concussion on the hit and combined with taking a Mikhail Grabovski stick in the eye in a game with the Toronto Maple Leafs three weeks earlier, the Hall-of-Fame defender was never able to return to action.
2013 — Kimmo Timonen snapped a 2-2 tie midway through the third period with his first goal of the season and also added a pair of assists, while Steve Mason stopped 32 of 34 shots in a 5-2 triumph over the Ottawa Senators at the Wells Fargo Center.
Claude Giroux opened the scoring with a power play tally late in the first, and Sean Couturier made it a 2-1 lead by the second intermission with his first goal of the campaign.
Ottawa’s Kyle Turris knotted the game while the Sens were on the man advantage early in the final frame, then nearly gave the visitors a lead on a shot with less than 10 minutes remaining in regulation. After almost 1:30 of video review, it was determined that defenseman Nicklas Grossmann had blocked Turris’ shot along the goal line, and there was no video evidence that the puck had fully crossed the plane.
Buoyed by the turn of good fortune, Philadelphia took full advantage shortly thereafter.
Timonen’s backhander beat goaltender Robin Lehner through the five hole, and Wayne Simmonds made it a two-goal Flyers’ lead just 0:23 later.
Ottawa had a golden opportunity to cut the lead to a single goal when Timonen pulled Turris down on a shorthanded breakaway and was awarded a penalty shot with just over five minutes left. Mason came up big, however, kicking Turris’ shot aside with his right pad to protect the 4-2 lead before Adam Hall iced the outcome with his first goal of the year, shorthanded and into the empty net with the Senators on a power play and Lehner pulled for an additional attacker.
November 19 Flyers’ Birthday
Dmitry Yushkevich was born on this day in 1971 in Cherepovets, Russia. A sixth-round (122nd-overall) draft pick of the Flyers in 1991, the “Russian Tank” made his NHL debut in the 1992/93 season. He played in 197 games over the next three years before being dealt to the Toronto Maple Leafs in August of 1995 then was re-acquired for the last 18 games of the 2002/03 campaign. In 215 regular season contests, Yushkevich posted 17 goals, 80 points, and 212 PIMs. He also appeared in the 1995 and 2003 postseasons in Philadelphia, notching a pair of goals, 11 points, and 14 PIMs in 28 games.
