Thursday Morning Fly By: Syvret’s Rehab, Trade Rumors, and Maroon Returns

Today’s open discussion thread, including your daily dose of Philadelphia Flyers news and notes…

  • Last night’s NHL scores… CAR 5 – NYR 1; BUF 2 – NJ 1 (SO); TB 3 – MTL 0; WAS 5 – ANA 1; MIN 5 – DET 2; DAL 4 – CAL 3 (SO); VAN 3 – STL 2
  • Flyers are still in 6th, but they are tied with four teams at 55 points.
  • The Flyers official website writes about Kevin Marshall and Marc-Andre Bourdon’s development. Do they read BSH? [Flyers]
  • With “Lost” coming back next week, The 700 Level looks at who the Flyers would bring back from the past. The answer might surprise you. [The700Level]
  • In case you aren’t an avid Preston & Steve listener like myself, Ian Laperriere was on the show recently. He’s hysterical. Here’s the audio. [The700Level]
  • An update on Danny Syvret’s rehab: “I thought I was progressing along pretty quickly, but it seems I am stuck in a position where I can’t make any quick movement in my shoulder shooting the puck – anything involving an explosive movement.” [CSNPhilly]
  • Patrick Maroon returned from his concussion last night. Let’s just say he had a good game: “In a grand return, Maroon scored twice, had an assist, and nearly a hat trick in the Phantoms 5-3 win over Binghamton.” [PostStar]
  • Ray Emery will be starting in net tonight. [John Boruk]
  • With the trade deadline approaching, there have been a lot of stories about who could be moving. Here are 10 players, one of whom is Marty Turco: “And he’d bring value from a team that could use some veteran stability in goal behind a strong blue line and talent up front. Unfortunately, that team plays in a city that eats goalies up like cheesesteaks and their beat writer doesn’t think the Philadelphia Flyers will even be looking for a goalie.” [Puck Daddy]
  • But one Philadelphia writer says you shouldn’t expect a big trade from the Flyers. [DelCoTimes]
  • Maybe they would grab Petr Sykora though? “Should he report [to the AHL](and that’s questionable) and Minnesota attempts to recall him, he would have to go through re-entry waivers and a team could claim him for half of his $1.6 million salary. That might make him attractive to the cap-strapped Flyers, who could use depth at right wing.” [Inquirer]
  • There has been a lot of talk about Sheldon Souray leaving Edmonton, and a fellow SBNation blog has breached NHL team offices. [The Copper & Blue]
  • Yesterday was a big day for Chris Pronger stories. First, an article about him: [CSNPhilly] then a two part interview: [DelcoTimes]
  • More Calder talk, this time giving Tyler Myers his due. But also mentioning James van Riemsdyk as a “darkhorse.” [Puck Daddy]
  • As mentioned in yesterday’s Fly By thread, Jay Bouwmeester is coming under fire. [Puck Daddy] I finally feel vindicated. [BSH]
  • Tim McManus looks at a player the Phantoms called up from the ECHL, sent him back, and let him get away: “A nearly point-a-game guy so far for a contending team isn’t half bad. Twelve points would put Steiner in the top-10 of the Phantoms scoring leaders, sad as that is. He’s exactly the kind of veteran, AHL-only guy that teams like Hershey, Chicago and Manitoba sign.” [PostStar]
  • How risky is it signing a goalie to a lucrative contract? Would you believe a 60% chance of success? “I don’t think there’s any arguing the fact that Holland … is right about goalies, and the fact that general managers continue to sign decidedly average players to big money contracts (for a recent example, see Ward, Cam) boggles my mind.” [Hockey or Die]
  • Funny gaffe by the Versus commentators:
