That was going to be my headline had the Flyers hung on to the 3-2 lead they’d held over the Sharks with five minutes remaining in the third period.
But, in typical fashion, the Flyers ruined my fun, Joe Thornton scored his first goal since last January to tie the game and then the usually dynamic trio of Claude Giroux, Jakub Voracek and Shayne Gostisbehere combined to create the most discombobulated 13-second shift ever played to allow Timo Meier to score the game-winning goal in overtime.
San Jose outshot the Flyers 35-25, converted one of three power play opportunities and killed all three of the minor penalties called against them. Cal Pickard started. For Philly to escape with a point on a night the opponent played so much better than they did, and to finish the California leg of the road trip 2-0-1, is a success by the numbers.
But the same problems that have lead to so many much uglier losses were all apparent. Ineffective special teams. Abundance of turnovers. Coverage lapses.
Nolan Patrick and Oskar Lindblom sure do look good, though.
