In a spooky day bombshell, the Philadelphia Flyers have recalled defenseman Philippe Myers, forward German Rubtsov, and forward Carsen Twarynski. The players going back to the Phantoms as a result of said move are Mikhail Vorobyev, and Samuel Morin who is on a conditioning stint and will not have to clear waivers. Scott Laughton has also been placed on long-term injured reserve after a successful surgery for his broken right index finger.

First of all, the Flyers got infected with “The Germ” on Halloween and I am convinced they did that on purpose, no one can tell me otherwise. Of course, the spiciest move here is the addition of Myers to the defensive core that has struggled over the past couple games. Myers has been off to a hot start with the Phantoms with four points in six games, and a Corsi percentage of 59.89 according to Brad’s lovely work on Phancy Stats.
Rubtsov has six points in seven games, with a Corsi of 44.55. Rubtsov impressed many in preseason and if he had a better showing in his final game vs. Boston, possibly could have stuck around a little longer. One thing is certain, Chuck Fletcher certainly wasn’t lying when he said there would be plenty of roster moves in October.
And finally we see the recall of Twarynski, in his limited stint with the Flyers earlier this season he had one point in six games, which was his first NHL goal. He failed to score in two games with Lehigh Valley since being sent back down.
As for the players sent down — Vorobyev has simply been sent back down, while Morin is being sent down on a conditioning stint. Here’s what the CBA has to say about conditioning loans (section 13.8):
Unless a Player consents, he shall not be Loaned on a Conditioning Loan to a minor league club. Such Conditioning Loan shall not extend for more than fourteen (14) consecutive days.
The Player shall continue, during the period of such Conditioning Loan, to receive the same Paragraph 1 NHL Salary, and be entitled to the same benefits, that he would have received had he continued to play with the Club.
The placement of Laughton on LTIR makes sense, given he’ll be out around four weeks.
One thing is certain with this new regime, there is absolutely a bias for action, and roster moves will be made if the team is not living up to expectations. Phil Myers didn’t win the job out of preseason, when he was absolutely supposed to. Now, he has his chance to show the coaches he belongs. As for Rubtosv? The bottom six is wide open right now. Seize the opportunity, Mr. Germ.
