It’s rare that you see an NHL goalie straight up call out his teammates for a poor performance after a game, but that’s essentially what Steve Mason did after the Flyers wasted a stellar performance in a 2-1 loss to the Dallas Stars on Tuesday night.
Here’s the video:
Here’s the transcript:
Q: The team wasted probably one of your best performances all season.
“I don’t know what to say. There’s no desperation… it’s tough to come in a room after games like that where we just needed to have a much better effort. It just wasn’t there.”
Q: Why do you think there was no desperation there? Did the bubble just burst over the weekend? Is that part of that?
“I don’t know. I hope every… I’m embarrassed. I hope everybody else is embarrassed because we have an effort like that at home in situations where we have to come up big, and we come up empty. We have to be a lot better.”
If a person can look like a volcano ready to erupt, Flyers goalie Steve Mason looked like that person in the locker room tonight. 1/2

One gets the impression “I’m embarassed” were the most charitable words he could come up. Can’t blame him. 2/2

There’s no doubt Mason caught himself as he started to say “I hope everybody else is embarrassed.” He wasn’t even going to add the “I’m embarrassed” part initially. Just cut right to his teammates, because they deserve the blame.
Mason shouldn’t be embarrassed over his performance tonight. He deserved better.
