Simon Gagne wants to return to the NHL

Simon Gagne played just 23 games for the Boston Bruins last season, ultimately leaving midway through the season in January to be with his ailing father.

It was thought that Gagne might retire from hockey, especially given that he had to fight just to get a spot with the Bruins last year, and that they used him in a bottom-six role, and that he only had four points in those 23 games. But nope — he’s not done just yet.

Gagne is just 35 years old, but he’s an old 35. He’s never been all that durable, and even during his prime with the Flyers throughout the early-to-mid 2000s, he never played a full season — only coming close to doing so on three occasions.

For the right price — he made $600,000 last season — Gagne might be a contributing bottom-six player on a decent team. The Flyers? Probably not a fit, although I guess you never know. It will be interesting to see whether or not teams have interest, but we sure hope Gagne gets to go out on his own terms — whenever that may be.
