PHILADELPHIA — After Peter Laviolette tinkered with the lineup in an attempt to get some more offense out of his club, the Philadelphia Flyers certainly generated plenty of opportunities to beat the Los Angeles Kings but just couldn’t get it done in the end, falling 1-0.

Jonathan Quick was fantastic (and pretty damn lucky, too) in making 40 saves to preserve the shutout. Drew Doughty scored the lone goal just 17 seconds into the second period, and while the Flyers pressed for just about the entire 39:43 thereafter, they just couldn’t put the puck in the back of the net.

A lot was said about the officiating today and how Chris Rooney and Dave Jackson need to go to hell. These are fair comments. The officiating was horrible today. Jarret Stoll hits Chris Pronger from behind and Pronger gets the penalty. That’s just one example, too. But the bottom line is pretty simple.

The Flyers suck so badly on the power play — seriously, not even able to gain zone, guys? — that they could’ve spent the entire 60 minutes on the power play and nothing would’ve happened. Hell, when the Kings committed a too many man on the ice penalty followed by a Dustin Brown trip to give the Flyers a 5-on-3 advantage, they looked even more inept up two men than they did up one man.

That’s what it’s come to now with the power play. They look like they’re almost trying too hard, and as a result, they just keep getting worse. It’s bad. And ultimately, with 7:40 of total power play time today, it’s easy to say the lack of power play punch was the reason they lost tonight.

Hey, on the bright side, they usually come out firing after a loss. Tampa on Tuesday. After the jump, post-game video, questions with answers and the comment of the day.

Questions with Answers

  1. The Kings played yesterday in Washington and a few days ago in Pittsburgh. Rough stretch, do they look tired? No, they didn’t look tired at all.
  2. Laviolette is switching up the lines, mostly to get Mike Richards on the score sheet a bit. Does it work, and mostly, can that new line of Richards, Giroux and Carter light up the board frequently today? Zero goals.
  3. Former Flyer Justin Williams is on a bit of a roll right now — five points in three games. Does he pace the Kings offensively today? Nope.
  4. Jonathan Quick also has not lost in regulation in five games. Can the Flyers beat him today? Yawn.
  5. Just like vs. Carolina, the Flyers have a streak going against the Kings. They’re 9-0-1 in their last 10 vs. Los Angeles. Can that continue today? Shit.
