Philadelphia Flyers injuries: Claude Giroux scored 17 playoff points with two hurt wrists, and more

We don’t necessarily know when all of these injuries occurred, but we do know that five key Flyers were suffering from injuries during the Stanley Cup Playoffs. A full list was released by the team this morning, and it includes:

  • Wayne Simmonds, who has already had surgery to repair a broken left index finger. He’ll be ready in plenty of time for next season.
  • Matt Carle, who has already had surgery to repair a torn stomach muscle. He’ll be ready in plenty of time for next season as well.
  • Claude Giroux, who had surgery on both wrists. He had torn cartilage in his right wrist and he had bone spurs removed from his left wrist. He’ll be fully recovered in six weeks.
  • Kimmo Timonen will have surgery next week to remove a disc fragment from his lower back. Will have surgery next week to remove a disc fragment from his lower back. Full recovery is expected in 8-10 weeks, which means he’ll be ready to go at some point in mid-July or the first week of August.
  • James van Riemsdyk will have surgery next week to repair a torn labrum in his right hip. He’ll be ready to go by the first week of July.

Does any of this change your opinion on how the team went down, or does it change your opinion on how certain players performed in the playoffs. Claude Giroux disappeared (relatively) against the Devils, but both of his wrists were screwed up. He led the playoffs in scoring, too. (Actually, still does lead the playoffs in scoring.)

The same can be said for Wayne Simmonds and James van Riemsdyk given their injuries, who also were general non-factors for much of the playoffs, at least on the score sheet. Matt Carle led the team in ice time with a torn stomach muscle, and of course, we knew Kimmo Timonen was hurt …
