Nicklas Grossmann injury update: Flyers lose defenseman for rest of season

Nicklas Grossmann is out for the rest of the season. That might be one day, that might be two days, that might be seven weeks, but no matter what, the Flyers will be without the defenseman until next season.

The team announced today that Grossmann had surgery to repair a busted ankle. The busting occurred last Friday in Game 4 of the First Round series against the Rangers. He’ll be out eight-to-10 weeks, meaning the best-case scenario would put him out about a week after any potential seventh game in the Stanley Cup Final.

“Nicklas had successful surgery this morning to repair tendon damage in his right ankle suffered in Game 4 of this playoff series,” Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren said in a statement. “Nicklas will be out of action for 8-10 weeks.”

Grossmann has two years left on his contract after this season at $3.5 million per season. He played in 78 games for the Flyers this season and is a top-four player on defense.
