After Eric found Ville Leino’s doppelganger, finding similar players has been a bit of a time waster for me. It’s fun.
So first, I wrote about David Legwand earning his cap hit this year for Nashville, despite many people claiming he is overpaid. This naturally wasn’t very popular, but it’s still entertaining.

In case the cap hit didn’t give it away, Player B is Andrej Meszaros. Player A is New York Islander Jack Hillen. The biggest difference? Meszaros plays on the power play (2:26 per game) while Hillen doesn’t (0:47 per game).
So, in comparison, the Flyers paid $3.5 million for six power play points?
Of course it isn’t that simple, but the similarities are striking. Unfortunately, Hillen is an RFA, so the Islanders will likely re-sign him. Fortunately, the Islanders already have five defensemen signed on one-way deals and two more (Travis Hamonic and Mark Katic) on two-way, entry-level deals, meaning Hillen may be the odd-man out.
Meszaros was deemed the Best Defenseman In The History Of The Modern World this year by a whole lot of fans – and some writers. Imagine paying less than $1 million for a guy to outplay Chris Pronger, Kimmo Timonen and Braydon Coburn and be deemed Bestest Defenseman In The History Of The Modern World.
