Every NHL team has passed on Michael Leighton, even at half price, and as a result, he’s still property of the Philadelphia Flyers today, one day after being placed on re-entry waivers.
He’ll be back in Philadelphia this afternoon and will be with the team for at least the remainder of the season and the playoffs. As Paul Holmgren indicated to several reporters on Tuesday, it’s likely he plays in one of the final two regular season games — either at Buffalo on Friday or back in Philly against the Islanders.
Holmgren says that the purpose of this move is to add depth to the goaltending situation in the playoffs. The risk paid off and Leighton is back in town, so we can’t be too mad about it now. Unless of course you can’t stand the thought of Michael Leighton on the Flyers.
It’ll be interesting to see if he can carry over any of the superb AHL success he’s had to the NHL, and it’ll be even more interesting to see just how much action he sees between now and the end of the year — whenever that end comes.
