We knew of two roster moves the Flyers made on Tuesday: one that activated goalie Michal Neuvirth from injured reserve, and another that sent goalie Anthony Stolarz to the Phantoms to make room on the active roster for Neuvy.
But those two moves put the Flyers over the salary cap by about $119,000, and thus they needed another move to get cap compliant. There were a few options: sending down a big contract like Andrew MacDonald’s was one, but that would have left Philadelphia with just six healthy defensemen on the NHL roster. They could have demoted Roman Lyubimov, too, since he’s waiver exempt. But they didn’t do that.
Instead, it’s just a paper move. The Flyers have played Mark Streit on long-term injured reserve, according to CSN’s Tim Panaccio, allowing them to temporarily exceed the salary cap up to his cap hit.
Streit has been out since December 12 with an upper body injury, when the team said he’d miss two weeks. December 12 was over three weeks ago.
