Intros First
Hi everyone! Let me introduce myself a bit: My name is Heather Barry and I am a Freelance Sports Photographer for the Philadelphia Flyers. Yes, I was one of the few rarities born and raised in Florida. How did I make it to living in Philly, you ask? Well…the Flyers of course!
A Little History Behind the Lens
My love for photographing hockey started in 2011 at the Amalie Arena in Tampa, Florida. I grew up watching the Bruins (because my family was from Boston), but I stayed more of a “neutral fan” until I watched a Flyers-Lightning game live. Claude Giroux was a heavy influence of my decision of becoming a Flyers fan: I loved his passion, leadership, and skill set on the ice.
At first, I wasn’t credentialed and I would bring my Canon to Lightning games and shoot warmups. My camera was initially just a hobby during the summer, but photographing sports sparked a fire in me. I wanted a creative outlet and being able to tell a story in a different perspective than a fan was just what I needed. I spent a few games of the 2013 season shadowing a professional photographer and because of the kindness and help I have received to get me to this point, I thrive on helping others in the photo field excel.
In 2015, I was invited to visit Philadelphia to cover a few home games at the Wells Fargo Center. The arena, the staff, and the press box are like family and so helpful. I also ventured throughout the city and decided this career drove me to make it a goal – move to Philly to do this for real. Another year of hard work and determination lead me to my dream of moving to the City of Brotherly Love in 2016. Since then, I have been fortunate enough to cover playoff hockey, junior hockey, and experience my first outdoor game.
Is It (Training Camp) Yet?
This will be my third full season covering the Flyers. This season I plan on breaking more creative grounds and sharing some new galleries and work for fans to enjoy (it’s a surprise)! I am excited, humbled, and honored to showcase my work alongside Broad Street Hockey and the fans!
