Behind Enemy Lines: Winging It In Motown
November 4, 1988. Brian Propp, Scott Mellanby, Terry Carkner, and Murray Craven scored for the Flyers en route to a 4-3 Philadelphia win at Joe Louis Arena. It was the last time the Flyers won a game in the city of Detroit. In that time, Stanley Cup Finals games have been played between these teams. 15 regular season games have been played. But the Flyers haven’t won any of them.
They’ll look to stop that tonight, but it won’t be an easy task. The Wings are the best team in the NHL heading into tonight. They’ve already clinched a playoff spot and they’ve scored 25 goals more than the team with the second most goals. And, obviously, they’ve got history in their favor.
Randy Jones will be out of the lineup for the Flyers. Danny Syvret has been called up from the Phantoms to take his place. He’ll probably be on the third pairing with Andrew Alberts.
The Flyers have given up the first goal in their last four games. When scoring first, Detroit has an unreal 34-4-1 record. The Wings are a very human 12-11-5 when the other team puts the puck in the net first. Simply put, the orange and black need to score first tonight.
Between The Pipes: Martin Biron is back in the net after a one game hiatus. He’s been red hot lately with a 7-3-0 record in his last 11 appearances. Chris Osgood will get his third straight start tonight. He got his 49th career shutout on Sunday and he has 22-6-7 record this season.
