Flyers vs. Devils preview: With 22 gone from camp, roster battles get more interesting

The Flyers take on the New Jersey Devils in their fourth preseason game of the season. This is officially where the preseason starts to get booooooooring.

Based on reports from Voorhees this morning, here’s the lineup we’re expecting this evening at Wells Fargo Center.

Andrew Gordon – Brayden Schenn – Jake Voracek
Michael Raffl – Vincent Lecavalier – Jason Akeson
Scott Laughton – Blair Jones – Taylor Leier
Zac Rinaldo – Chris VandeVelde – Jay Rosehill

Andrew MacDonald – Braydon Coburn
Nicklas Grossmann – Mark Streit
Samuel Morin – Shayne Gostisbehere

We’re guessing Steve Mason will start in goal. He, Rob Zepp and Ray Emery are the only three goalies remaining in Flyers camp.

It’s a big game for a few guys on that list, but namely Scott Laughton, who continues to border on the “lock for the AHL” side of the roster discussion. He’s not playing center, so it appears Craig Berube wants to take a harder look at him at a position where the Flyers roster isn’t extremely deep at the moment.

The defense is intriguing. We’ll get another deep look at MacDonald and Coburn, which is shaping up to be the Flyers top pairing this year, and Grossmann and Streit will continue to get reacquainted. Those two were a pairing for the majority of last season and really played well after the February Olympic break, so it’s imperative that they play together as much as possible between now and the beginning of the season.

Samuel Morin and Shayne Gostisbehere will get more of a look tonight as well. They each escaped the first round of cuts yesterday. Michael Del Zotto and Luke Schenn are your NHL-level starters sitting tonight.
