Danny Syvret has been traded by the Flyers approximately 413,000 times. Make it 413,001. The Flyers announced this evening that they’ve trade the Phantoms defenseman to the New York Rangers organization in exchange for tough guy Kris Newbury.
Newbury is a goon, plain and simple. He had 127 PIM in 70 games last season with the Connecticut Whale of the AHL, and he appeared in six games as a call-up with the Rangers. He projects as nothing more than a goon, and with Jay Rosehill and Zac Rinaldo both on the NHL roster in Philadelphia, this is a move for the Phantoms. Nothing more. He can score a little bit at the AHL level, which is nice.
Syvret is a fringe NHL defenseman and a top-pairing AHL guy. He’s never had a chance in Philadelphia aside from a game here or there, and there are many guys ahead of him on the depth chart. Now in the Rangers organization, hopefully he gets more of a chance to crack the NHL.
