Immediately on the heels of today’s win over St. Louis, the Flyers have announced that they’ve signed 25-year old winger Michael Raffl to a two-year contract extension. The news was originally broken by the team, and Flyers Inside Out reporter Anthony SanFilippo confirmed the financial terms shortly after.

A rookie who spent last year in Allsvenskan before being signed by the Flyers as an undrafted free agent last May, Raffl has nine goals and 12 assists in 57 games this year. He’s spent time on a lot of different lines — with Sean Couturier and Matt Read on a shutdown line, with Claude Giroux and Jakub Voracek on the top line, and most recently on the fourth line with Zac Rinaldo and Adam Hall.
He’s brought a lot of speed and hockey smarts to a lineup that sometimes seems to be lacking in both, and this is a nice little deal for the Flyers to extend a guy who’s been a pleasant surprise this year. Charlie wrote in Decemberabout how his career’s got out to a pretty good start, and what we’ve seen since then is only more encouraging. He’s been another good find for the Flyers from the undrafted free agent department.
