The Flyers have signed former Blues defenseman Carlo Colaiacovo, a move that undoubtedly hopes to mitigate some of the defensive woes in Philadelphia.
Ever since the Braydon Coburn and Andrew MacDonald injuries were announced, rumors have been spreading about the Flyers acquiring a free-agent defenseman. And with Ron Hextall expressing his disdain with having to bring up Shayne Gostisbehere from the American Hockey League, we pretty much knew that something was going to happen.
The name that was floating around most recently was Ryan Whitney– who currently plays in the KHL — but (thank god) he was passed over for Carlo Calaiacovo.
Colaiacovo joins the Flyers as an unrestricted free agent after serving time with both the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Detroit Red Wings (for a minute) and more recently, the St. Louis Blues.
In his most recent season with the Blues, he put up one goal and three assists in 25 games. Not exactly a point scorer, but he could be a nice addition to the current, er, terrible blue line of the Flyers. His possession numbers have been pretty decent, but keep in mind that he has played alongside Alex Pietrangelo in recent years.
Colaiacovo’s addition will undoubtedly mean that one of the younger guys will be sent back to the AHL, which is either a good or bad thing depending on how you feel about developing defensemen.
