Phantoms update: This is Danick Martel’s world, we’re just living in it
11/3 – 6-5 SO LOSS
11/4 – 6-5 WIN (Highlights)
11/5 – 5-1 LOSS
Philippe Myers (D): 1 GP, 1 assist, 1 shot
Undrafted Free Agent
Myers missed both Saturday and Sunday’s games after exiting the game early on Friday. Myers has been limited to just 9 of the Phantom’s 13 games this season due to injuries. These aren’t great signs for the promising defenseman who has had injury troubles last season as well. Myers sits at 5 points (2 G, 3 A).
Mark Friedman (D): 3 GP, 9 shots
2014 3rd Round Pick, 86th overall
It certainly isn’t for a lack of trying as Mark Friedman has racked up 27 shots in 12 games so far, but has yet to find the back of the net. Just 2 points this season for the rookie d-man.
Mike Vecchione (C): 3 GP, 2 assists, 4 shots, 2 PIM
Undrafted Free Agent
Vecchione nearly keeps his point-per-game pace with a pair of assists on the weekend. He has 12 points (2 G, 10 A) in 13 games.
Nicolas Aubé-Kubel (RW): 3 GP, 1 goal, 1 assist, 4 shots, 4 PIM
2014 2nd Round Pick, 48th overall
Aube-Kubel’s 4th goal of the season puts him just 5 away from his total in 2016-17.
Danick Martel (RW): 3 GP, 3 goals, 1 assist, 9 shots
Undrafted Free Agent
For those not counting at home, that is a 5-game goal-scoring streak for Martel. His 13 goals in 13 games lead the AHL. The next closest skater has 8. Check out a couple of his goals from the weekend here and here.
Oskar Lindblom (LW): 3 GP, 2 assists, 4 shots
2014 5th Round Pick, 138th overall
The 5-game point streak came to an end on Saturday. Lindblom has collected 8 points (2 G, 6 A) in 13 games this rookie season.
Mikhail Vorobyov (C): 3 GP, 1 goal, 3 shots
2015 4th Round Pick, 104th overall
Vorobyov’s first professional goal! That’s 6 points (1 G, 5 A) in 13 games for the Russian rookie.
Alex Lyon (G): 1 GP, 4 GA, 11 saves
Undrafted Free Agent
It’s hard to imagine Stolarz not out-performing Lyon this season if he were healthy. Though with the string of injuries (Brennan, Morin, Myers) and call-ups (O’Neill) it’s had to of been a tough job. Not to mention guys like Sanheim and Hagg starting the season with the big-club. Lyon sports an ugly .897 SV% in 9 games.
Notable Canadian junior performers this week:
Connor Bunnaman (C/LW), Kitchener Rangers (OHL)
2016 4th Round Pick, 109th overall
The Bun-man has been very good of late, scoring 9 goals in his last 9 games. Coincidentally that is also his goal total for the season. The power forward has 13 points (9 G, 4 A) in 15 games.
Anthony Salinitri (C), Sarnia Sting (OHL)
2016 6th Round Pick, 172nd overall
It’s been a tough stretch for Salinitri who has just 2 points in his last 8 games. The 4th year OHLer has 15 points (4 G, 11 A) in 18 games.
Morgan Frost (C), Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds (OHL)
2017 1st Round Pick, 27th overall
- 11/1 – 3 assists, 5 shots, 17 for 28 FOW
- 11/4 – 6 shots, 2 PIM, 9 for 21 FOW
- 11/5 – 1 assist, 1 shot, 2 PIM, 11 for 19 FOW/
This Morgan Frost character is looking alright, huh? 22 points (7 G, 15 A) in 18 games in his 3rd season in the OHL. He is on a 80+ point game pace for the season.
Isaac Ratcliffe (LW), Guelph Storm (OHL)
2017 2nd Round Pick, 35th overall
Ratcliffe missed Friday’s game with the flu, but made it out for Saturday’s contest. He sits at a slightly disappointing 9 points (5 G, 4 A) in 16 games.
Maksim Sushko (RW), Owen Sound Attack (OHL)
2017 4th Round Pick, 107th overall
A quiet week for Sushko who remains at 14 points (9 G, 5 A) in 14 games. This has still been quite the breakout for the 18 year old Belarusian.
Matthew Strome (LW), Hamilton Bulldogs (OHL)
2017 4th Round Pick, 106th overall
The youngest of the Strome brothers continues to putter along. He has 5 goals and 5 assists in 15 games this season. His assists this weekend were his first since 10/14.
Carsen Twarynski (LW), Kelowna Rockets (WHL)
2016 3rd Round Pick, 82nd overall
- 11/1 – 1 shot, 2 for 7 FOW
- 11/3 – 5 shots, 15 PIM, 1 for 7 FOW
- 11/4 – 1 assist, 1 shot, 2 for 4 FOW/
It wasn’t a great weekend for Twarynski who received a major-boarding penalty and game misconduct on Friday. No reports if there will be supplemental punishment for Twarynski, but game misconduct would indicate to me that one could be on its way. Otherwise, the 4th year WHLer has 16 points (9 G, 7 A) in 14 games.
Carter Hart (G), Everett Silvertips (WHL)
2016 2nd Round Pick, 48th overall
Perhaps the best news of the week is CARTER HART IS BACK!!! He had been out of the lineup since 9/30 with mono. He will be participating in the CIBC Canada/Russia series for Team WHL.
Pascal Laberge (C), Victoriaville Tigres (QMJHL)
2016 2nd Round Pick, 36th overall
Still not quite at the pace that would have me excited for the former 2nd round pick. Laberge has 12 points (4 G, 8 A) in 15 games.
German Rubtsov (C), Acadie-Bathurst Titan (QMJHL)
2016 1st Round Pick, 22nd overall
You might recognize that Rubtsov is no longer playing for Chicoutimi as he was traded last week. This is likely a good thing for Rubtsov as Acadie-Bathurst is a much better team. Combined, he has 14 points (4 G, 10 A) in 13 games. You can see his goal here. Rubstov will also be participating in the CIBC Canada/Russia series for Team Russia.
Notable European performers this week
Linus Högberg (D), Växjö Lakers HC (SHL)
2016 5th Round Pick, 139th overall
With the new week also went Högberg’s lengthy TOI from last week (games of 21:07 and 19:13).
David Bernhardt (D), Djurgårdens IF (SHL)
2016 7th Round Pick, 199th overall
Go figure Bernhardt’s first points of the season would come in the same weekend. Still seeking out that first goal of the season (he had just 2 in 27 games with Djurgårdens last season)
David Kaše (C/W), Mora IK (SHL)
2015 5th Round Pick, 128th overall
It certainly didn’t look good as Kase took a hip (or perhaps knee on knee?) check in Saturday’s game. He could be out for awhile.
Olle Lycksell (RW/C), Linköping HC (SHL)
2017 6th Round Pick, 168th overall
- 11/5 – 3 shots, 2 PIM, 8:47 TOI/
Lycksell makes his SHL debut! Not too shabby for the 18 year old. He had 13 points (7 G, 6 A) in 17 games for the J20 team.
Ivan Fedotov (G), Toros Neftekamsk (VHL)
2015 7th Round Pick, 188th overall
The forgettable season continues for Fedotov as he adds onto his .891 SV% in 11 games.
Kirill Ustimenko (G), MHK Dynamo St. Petersburg (MHL)
2017 3rd Round Pick, 80th overall
Ustimenko hung on in a slugfest 8-5 victory on Halloween and followed it up with a solid performance the next day. He holds a .921 SV% in 20 games.
Euro Notes: Felix Sandström (G) remains out of the lineup for Brynäs IF and did not play last week (undisclosed injury).
Notable NCAA and USHL performers this week:
Wade Allison (RW), Western Michigan University
2016 2nd Round Pick, 52nd overall
Allison is already at half his goal total (6) from last season (12). However, he’s done it in 9 games thus far as opposed to the 36 last year. We should soon expecting big things from the sophomore winger. You can check out his goals on Saturday here.
Tanner Laczynski (RW/C), Ohio State University
2016 6th Round Pick, 169th overall
Fellow sophomore Laczynski has 10 points (3 G, 7 A) in 10 games this season.
Cooper Marody (C), University of Michigan
2015 6th Round Pick, 158th overall
Marody is really picking things up, collecting 12 points (3 G, 9 A) in his first 8 games. This is the kind of breakout that was expected last season. You can see his first and second goal here.
Brendan Warren (LW), University of Michigan
2015 3rd Round Pick, 81st overall
Warren did not partake in the scoring despite the 9 goals scored by Michigan this weekend.
David Drake (D), University of Connecticut
2013 7th Round Pick, 192nd overall
Drake is about as boring a prospect as you can follow. He has 0 points in 10 games this season.
Wyatt Kalynuk (D), University of Wisconsin
2017 7th Round Pick, 196th overall
After a 3-game point streak that saw him get all his season’s points (5 assists), Kalynuk goes cold this weekend against North Dakota.
Terrance Amorosa (D), Clarkson University
2013 5th Round Pick, 132nd overall
Amorosa bags another two assists to give him 7 on the season (to go along with his 2 goals). He is Clarkson’s 2nd leading scorer.
Noah Cates (LW), Omaha Lancers (USHL)
2017 5th Round Pick, 137th overall
- 11/3 – 2 PIM
- 11/4 – 1 goal, 4 shots/
Second goal of the season for Cates to give him 3 points in 10 USHL games.
Matej Tomek (G), Waterloo Black Hawks (USHL)
2015 3rd Round Pick, 90th overall
- 11/4 – 5 GA, 25 saves/
The string of bad starts continue for Tomek who has given up 3, 4 and 5 goals in his last 3 starts. His SV% and GAA on the season are .885 and 3.07, respectively.
