Flyers prospect report: Morgan Frost leads the OHL in points (and also our hearts)

Notable Phantoms performers this week:

Philippe Myers (D): 3 GP, 3 assists, 7 shots, 4 PIM
Undrafted Free Agent

14 points (5 G, 9 A) in 21 games in his 2nd AHL season, no big deal.

Mark Friedman (D): 3 GP, 1 assist, 5 shots, 4 PIM
2014 3rd Round Pick, 86th overall

After a flurry of points in his first couple weeks of the season, Friedman has slowed down. He has 11 points (1 G, 10 A) in 21 games.

Nicholas Aube-Kubel (RW): 3 GP, 2 goals, 4 shots
2014 2nd Round Pick, 48th overall

NAK contributed the game-winning OT goal on Friday and this ridiculous falling snipe on Sunday. That’s 11 points (6 G, 5 A) in 13 games in the AHL this season.

Mikhail Vorobyev (C), 3 GP, 1 assist, 2 shots, 4 PIM
2015 4th Round Pick, 104th overall

The “Screw u Dave Hakstol” campaign hit a bit of a lull this week. Mike sits at 9 points (3 G, 6 A) in 13 games.

Carsen Twarynski (LW): 1 GP, 0 shots
2016 3rd Round Pick, 82nd overall

Twarynski only saw action in Saturday’s game. He has 4 points in 17 games in his first official AHL season (Twarynski appeared in 5 regular season and 2 playoffs games at the end of the 17/18 campaign).

David Kaše (RW): 3 GP, 2 assists, 8 shots
2015 5th Round Pick, 128th overall

Kase breaks a 6-game scoreless streak on Sunday with a two-assist effort. The AHL rookie has 12 points (4 G, 8 A) in 18 games.

Connor Bunnaman (C): 2 GP, 0 shots
2016 4th Round Pick, 109th overall

Things have been less than ideal for Bunnaman in his AHL rookie campaign. I pondered during a poor 4th OHL season last year that the Flyers may have jumped the gun on giving Bunnaman an entry-level contract. He’s been a frequent healthy scratch this season and has just 3 points in 13 games.

Carter Hart (G): 2 GP, 4 GA, 59 saves
2016 2nd Round Pick, 48th overall

This is the 1st time all season in which Hart has had back-to-back performances in which he posted save percentages above .900. Things seem to be looking up! Hart’s SV% has crept up to .893 in 14 games this season.

Notable Canadian junior performers this week:

Morgan Frost (C), Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds (OHL)
2017 1st Round Pick, 27th overall

  • 11/29 – 2 assists, 5 shots, 8 for 19 FOW
  • 12/1 – 2 goals, 2 assists, 5 shots, 8 for 20 FOW
  • 12/2 – 1 goal, 2 assists, 5 shots, 13 for 27 FOW/

What more can be said that we don’t know already? He’s nearly a 2.00 point-per-game player in his 4th OHL season. He leads the OHL in points at 55 (with the 2nd highest coming in at 52). He was selected to the World Junior Championship Team Canada camp. For funsies, here is his goal from Sunday.

Isaac Ratcliffe (LW), Guelph Storm (OHL)
2017 2nd Round Pick, 35th overall

  • 11/30 – 2 assists, 3 shots
  • 12/2 – 1 assist, 2 shots/

Ratcliffe remains on pace to set career-highs in both goals and assists. His 19 goals lead the Storm.

Matthew Strome (LW), Hamilton Bulldogs (OHL)
2017 4th Round Pick, 106th overall

  • 11/30 – 3 assists, 7 shots, 1 for 5 FOW
  • 12/1 – 1 assist, 1 shot, 5 for 10 FOW
  • 12/2 – 3 shots, 4 for 5 FOW/

It’s been an interesting 4th OHL season for Strome. It doesn’t appear he will match his career-high 37 goals from last season (he has just 10 through 28 games), but he’s already at 22 assists which is just 9 away from his high from last season. Hamilton kind of stinks this year, but it’s good to see him above his point-per-game pace from last season.

Maksim Sushko (RW), Owen Sound Attack (OHL)
2017 4th Round Pick, 107th overall

  • 11/28 – 5 shots
  • 11/29 – 1 assist, 1 shot, 2 PIM
  • 12/1 – 1 shot, 2 PIM/

The notably streaky Sushko has hit a cold one, only scoring 1 assist in his last 6 games. He has 22 points (6 G, 16 A) in 29 games.

Wyatte Wylie (D), Everett Silvertips (WHL)
2018 5th Round Pick, 127th overall

  • 11/28 – 1 assist, 2 shots
  • 11/30 – 1 goal, 1 assist, 4 shots, 2 PIM
  • 12/1 – 7 shots, 2 for 2 FOW/

By my calculations (reviewing The Stats), Wylie tied his career-high in goals (6) in 42 less games than last season. He’s only 5 away from his assist total from last season as well. In conclusion, Wylie is having a very good season.

Egor Zamula (D), Calgary Hitmen (WHL)
Undrafted Free Agent

  • 11/30 – 1 shot
  • 12/1 – 1 assist, 1 shot
  • 12/2 – 1 goal, 1 assist, 2 shots/

Things continue to go very well for Zamula. In his last 21 games he has 4 goals and 16 assists.

Notable European performers this week

Linus Högberg (D), Växjö Lakers HC (SHL)

David Bernhardt (D), Djurgårdens IF (SHL)
2016 7th Round Pick, 199th overall

Bernhardt didn’t dress in the only game this week for Djurgårdens. He is likely getting a bit more rest given his injury issues this season.

Adam Ginning (D), Linköping HC (SHL)
2018 2nd Round Pick, 50th overall

  • 11/29 – 10:06 TOI
  • 12/1 – 1 assist, 2 shots, 18:43 TOI/

His assist on Saturday gave Ginning 4 points (1 G, 3 A) in 23 games this season.

Olle Lycksell (RW/C), Linköping HC (SHL)
2017 6th Round Pick, 168th overall

  • 11/29 – 1 assist, 12:04 TOI
  • 12/1 – 2 shots, 10:37 TOI/

The 19 year old Lycksell has 8 points (2 G, 6 A) in 23 games with Linköping this season. He had 7 in 26 games last year.

Marcus Westfält (C), Brynäs IF J20 (SuperElit)
2018 7th Round Pick, 205th overall

Westfält was sent back down to the J20 squad after putting up 0 points in 12 games for the big club. In the SuperElit he is now up to 10 points (4 G, 6 A) in 12 games.

Felix Sandström (G), HV71 (SHL)
2015 3rd Round Pick, 70th overall

Sandström didn’t get in any games this week and has only played in 9 this season to the tune of a .897 SV%.

Samuel Ersson (G), Västerås IK (Allsvenskan)
2018 5th Round Pick, 143rd overall

  • 11/30 – 1 GA, 23 saves
  • 12/2 – 1 GA, 24 saves/

Uhh…Ersson has been really, really good. He has a .944 SV% in 14 games this season. That leads all of Allsvendskan. Ersson is 19 years old. Three other goalies in the Top 5 in SV% are all 27 years of age.

Ivan Fedotov (G), HC Toros (VHL)
2015 7th Round Pick, 188th overall

Still no games for Fedotov. Despite the .926 SV% in 13 games, he isn’t seeing any action for HC Toros.

Kirill Ustimenko (G), MHK Dynamo St. Petersburg (MHL)
2017 3rd Round Pick, 80th overall

No recent games played for Ustimenko, who has a .910 SV% through 23 games.

Notable collegiate performers this week

Wade Allison (RW), Western Michigan University
2016 2nd Round Pick, 52nd overall

  • 11/30 – 0 shots, 2 PIM
  • 12/1 – 1 assist, 1 shot/

A surprisingly quiet weekend for the college junior. He picked up his second assist of the season and has 4 points in 4 games.

Joel Farabee (LW), Boston University
2018 1st Round Pick, 14th overall

  • 11/30 – 1 assist, 5 shots, 2 for 12 FOW
  • 12/1 – 4 shots, 2 PIM, 5 for 12 FOW/

Boston University struggled this weekend versus Boston College, falling 4-1 on Friday and then tying 0-0 on Saturday. Farabee now has 7 points (3 G, 4 A) in 13 games in his freshman season.

Tanner Laczynski (C/W), Ohio State University
2016 6th Round Pick, 169th overall

  • 11/30 – 1 assist, 2 shots
  • 12/1 – 1 assist, 11 shots/

OSU tied in both games this weekend 2-2 to Minnesota. Laczynski’s two assists put him over a point-per-game for the season with 14 (5 G, 9 A) in 13 games.

Gavin Hain (C/W), University of North Dakota
2018 6th Round Pick, 174th overall

Hain’s squad played Noah Cates’ this weekend and split the two games. Hain still has just 1 assist in 9 games this season.

Jay O’Brien (C), Providence College
2018 1st Round Pick, 19th overall

  • 11/30 – 1 shot, 2 for 3 FOW
  • 12/1 – 1 goal, 4 shots, 2 for 5 FOW/

O’Brien scored his first NCAA goal this weekend! It was also his first point in 9 games.

Brendan Warren (LW), University of Michigan
2015 3rd Round Pick, 81st overall

Here is a SCOOP….Warren won’t be offered an entry-level contract at the end of this season.

Noah Cates (LW), University of Minnesota-Duluth
2017 5th Round Pick, 137th overall

  • 11/30 – 4 shots, 0 for 1 FOW
  • 12/1 – 2 shots, 0 for 1 FOW/

Cates and Minnesota-Duluth were back in action after a week off. Cates didn’t make it onto the scoreboard and holds at 6 points (3 G, 3 A) in 14 games this season.

Wyatt Kalynuk (D), University of Wisconsin
2017 7th Round Pick, 196th overall

  • 11/30 – 0 shots, 2 PIM
  • 12/1 – 1 goal, 1 assist, 2 shots/

It’s hard not to be impressed with St. Ivany’s NCAA debut. He’s put up 6 points (1 G, 5 A) in 9 games for Yale.

Matej Tomek (G), University of Nebraska-Omaha
2015 3rd Round Pick, 90th overall

12/1 – 2 GA, 18 saves

Tomek came into the game in a mop-up role (shocker!) after the starter gave up 4 goals on 16 shots. Saturday might have actually been his best performance of the season. Tomek has a .828 SV% in 4 appearances.
