The Flyers have a new coach, and that man is Alain Vigneault.

Vigneault will sign a multi-year contract according the the club, making him the 21st head coach in Flyers history. He follows Dave Hakstol, whom Flyers GM Chuck Fletcher fired on Dec. 17 of this past season. Hakstol was followed by interim head coach Scott Gordon, who was also given consideration for the permanent vacancy until the announcement of Vigneault’s hire today.
The 57-year-old has made stops as a head coach in Montreal, Vancouver, and most recently in New York with the Rangers. He has a 648-435-35-98 record to go along with a .588 winning percentage. He’s made the Stanley Cup Final twice, losing both in 2011 and 2014.
Fletcher had the following to say about his new head coach in the Flyers’ release on the move.
“We are extremely excited to have Alain join this franchise and lead our team behind the bench for many years to come,” said Fletcher. ”He brings a tremendous amount of success over an extended period of time that will prove valuable to our team to take the next steps in returning the winning culture to the Philadelphia Flyers organization.”
Before Vigneault begins his Flyers career, he’s off serving as the head coach for Team Canada at the 2019 IIHF World Championships in Slovakia.
