Update: The Flyers have announced that Vinny Lecavalier is “day-to-day” with a facial contusion, while Steve Downie remains hospitalized.
The Flyers are licking their wounds this Saturday, hours after putting on an embarrassing show on the Wells Fargo Center ice against the Washington Capitals.
As of the this morning, Flyers forward Steve Downie was still in a Philadelphia hospital undergoing treatment for a concussion he suffered during a fight on Friday, per Philadelphia Daily News’ Frank Seravalli.
Downie was injured during a fight with Washington Capitals forward Aaron Volpatti during the second period of Philly’s 7-0 loss on Friday. Seravalli also reports that Downie asked Volpatti to end the fight after realizing the extent of his injury. Downie was taken to the hospital on a stretcher two hours after the fight and remained overnight with a concussion. The Flyers have not provided any official update on his status.
Lecavalier was injured during a third period line brawl when he fought Steve Oleksy. He suffered a facial injury and lost a few teeth, but TSN’s Bob McKenzie reports that the injury will sideline him for a few weeks. Lecavalier missed a week with an injury earlier this year. The brawl came after goalie Ray Emery sprinted down the ice and jumped Capitals goaltender Braden Holtby, and Lecavalier paired off with Olesky as everybody on the ice went at it.
Tye McGinn has been recalled from the Adirondack Phantoms. Jay Rosehill will slot in the lineup Saturday night vs. New Jersey as well.
It remains to be seen whether goalie Emery will face league discipline for his part in the line brawl. As of Saturday morning the NHL had not scheduled any hearings with any of the players involved.
