Three Stars
1. Claude Giroux
The captain was superb in this game, one which the Flyers desperately needed to play well in. He got the scoring started answering two straight goals from Carolina to open the game, giving the Flyers the boost they needed. He followed by assisting on the following three tallies that tied the game, gave them the lead, and gave them the lead again. This needed to be a huge game from the Flyers, and Giroux certainly didn’t disappoint.
2. Brian Elliott
Despite looking leaky at times, Elliott kept the Flyers afloat in the second period after they got the lead. Carolina surged (pun intended) right back and ended up outshooting them 19-4 in the period. Without Elliott, the Canes put this game away in the second, and they definitely would have come back to win in the third. Moose was huge tonight, and got the Flyers a needed win.
3. Morgan Frost
The rookie was at it again, this time registering his first multi-point game of his NHL career. He scored his first career short-handed goal, and then assisted on Claude Giroux’s game-winning tally. Frost has shown from the second he stepped on the ice, he could handle NHL competition and the pace. He continued to prove it tonight and man is it fun to watch. His offensive creativity is so exciting, and something this team has needed.
Answering the Bell
1. Can the power play right the ship?
Somewhat. They definitely looked better with Giroux on the left (what a shocker), and got a power play goal from Ivan Provorov. It’s clear this team looks better on the man advantage with Giroux on the left side at the very least most of the time. Hopefully assistant coach Michel Therrien continues to keep him there, because this could be a truly dangerous unit if he does.
2. Will the offense come to life?
They absolutely looked more dangerous at times, but the consistency still wasn’t there. Konecny made a great play on the rush to set up Giroux for the first goal, but again, they needed more of those plays. Obviously the Canes are a good team and they’re not going to be able to have their way with them, but they have to be more consistent at generating high quality chances. At the end of the day though, four goals is four goals, which was nice to see.
Play of the Night
Konecny’s pass to Giroux for the Flyers’ first goal of the game was pure filth, and takes home the play of the night trophy. There actually isn’t a trophy, but let’s pretend there is.
