Flyers call up defenseman Davis Drewiske, Chris Conner sent down

When Evgeny Medvedev was sent back to Philadelphia for evaluation on an upper-body injury yesterday, the move left the Flyers with only six healthy defensemen on their western road trip. The Flyers quickly addressed that issue this morning, recalling Davis Drewiske from the Lehigh Valley Phantoms.

Chris Conner, who had served as the team’s 13th forward during the road trip and did not dress for a game, was returned to Lehigh Valley as a result of the move. Drewiske has scored one point – an assist – in nine games in the AHL this season.

Drewiske will likely serve as the team’s seventh defenseman for the remainder of the road trip, despite the blueline’s struggles. The 30-year old defenseman was primarily called up due to his low salary cap hit ($575,000) and not because Flyers general manager Ron Hextall sees the veteran as a solution to the blueline’s recent woes. Drewiske last played in the NHL in the 2012-13 season, dressing in 29 games for the Los Angeles Kings and Montreal Canadiens.
