I wanted to make the headline “Please tell me whyyyyy… I’m still watching this team” but thought that would make you all less likely to click that headline, and therefore less likely to listen to the postgame, and that would be bad for me. But I had to use Lit lyrics after this discussion became the most entertaining part, to me, of the second and third periods. So, here we are. Ok, now here’s the real article:
If you like high-event hockey, and have no rooting interest, the first half of the first period was certainly for you. The St. Louis Blues opened up a 3-0 lead in the first 5:33 of the game on goals by Ivan Barbashev (14), Ryan O’Reilly (28), and Alexander Steen (9).
Oskar Lindblom got the Flyers on the board with his 16th goal of the season but 13 seconds later Pat Maroon netted his tenth to re-extend the Blues’ lead to three goals. JVR cut the score down to 4-2 less than 30 seconds after that with his 27th tally, but David Perron potted his 23rd goal of the year on a St. Louis power play to stretch the lead to 5-3.
This was all before the ten-minute mark of the first period.
Claude Giroux scored in the final minute of the first to give fans hope, at least the ones not watching the Flyers’ draft position, that this ridiculous game might go Philly’s way. But the captain’s 22nd was the end of the orange and black’s offensive output.
Brayden Schenn’s 16th of the year and second career goal against the Flyers stood as the lone score of the second period, and Steen added his second of the night in the third to officially cap off the evening.
Oh, and Samuel Morin almost fought Maroon. That would’ve been cool. You know what is cool though? Listening to postgame. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.
