The Flyers are continuing their dive into modern NHL analytics.
President of Hockey Operations & General Manager Chuck Fletcher announced that Ian Anderson has been promoted to Director of Hockey Analytics among a pair of other moves within the teams hockey analytics department. Anderson joined the Flyers in 2014 and is the second-longest-tenured analytics staff member in the NHL, according to the team.
In addition to Anderson’s elevation, Jacob Hurlbut has been promoted to Lead Developer, also in the hockey analytics department. He’s been with the Flyers and the department since 2016. Tom Minton has been named Director of Hockey Information/Video, having spent the last four seasons with the Minnesota Wild in various hockey operations roles. Lastly, Matthew Karliner has also joined the department as an Analyst after working for non-hockey related ventures with Lockheed Martin and roundball analytics at St. Joe’s. These men will “round out” the Flyers’ analytics staff, as they call it.
While with the Wild Fletcher was known to have one of the more forward thinking front offices in terms of analytics and it sure seems as though he’s bound to carry that same vision here during his time with the Flyers. It’s really a welcome sight given the recent success of some of the more analytically driven teams like the Hurricanes, Maple Leafs, Stars and others.

For years the Flyers were behind the curve with the likes of old-school hockey men like Paul Holmgren and Bobby Clarke running the show, but with Fletcher running things the Flyers are firmly aligning with the future of a combination of talent evaluation via scouting and analytics working hand-in-hand.
