With only a few hours left in both 2019 and the 2010’s it’s time to look back at what the Philadelphia Flyers have done over the past decade. It’s been a weird ten years for the franchise, as this may be regarded as the worst ten-year window in franchise history, but it hasn’t been all bad.
Although there’s been a lot of agonizing defeats there have also been plenty of thrilling wins. Exactly 62 of those thrilling wins ended with the Flyers scoring a goal in overtime. Considering the importance of each overtime goal as well as how impressive the play leading up to the goal was, let’s go ahead and rank each and every overtime tally Philly has enjoyed since the calendar turned to 2010.

20. Jaromir Jagr against the Winnipeg Jets – February 21, 2012.
Although he was here for only a year Jaromir Jagr managed to provide one of the more entertaining overtime goals in recent Flyers’ history. The shot was pretty decent, but the goal only happened because Danny Briere worked over future former Flyer Johnny Oduya to regain possession a second before he set up Jagr for the win. None of this would have been possible if Wayne Simmonds hadn’t tied this game with 9.7 seconds left in regulation off an incredible feed from James van Riemsdyk.
19. Brayden Schenn against the New Jersey Devils – January 7, 2014.
The play to set up the goal (Nicklas Grossmann with what has to be his best offensive play ever and Brayden Schenn’s ability to quickly kick the puck to his stick for a dunk) would have put this OT goal high on the list as is, but it’s what happened earlier in the game that makes this goal so special. After Schenn planted Dainius Zubrus with a hit in the neutral zone Zubrus’ skate flew up and gashed Schenn’s midsection leaving a pretty significant cut. Schenn managed to work through the injury and grabbed the extra point for the Orange and Black.
18. Claude Giroux against the Pittsburgh Penguins – January 20, 2015.
As is the case with a few of the goals listed below, Claude Giroux’s winner against the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2015 wasn’t so much about the goal itself but the fact Flyers’ fans actually had something to cheer about at a miserable point in a lost season. The 2014-15 season, for lack of better terms, was ass. The team lacked so much offensive depth Michael Raffl was a first-liner, the defense was atrocious with Andrew MacDonald in his first full season with the team, and the whole year was just a real drag. One of the highlights was this win against the Pens, which was a violent tilt that featured four fights (including Pierre-Edouard Bellemare making a name for Bobby Farnham) and Zac Rinaldo’s dirty hit on Kris Letang.
17. Simon Gagne against the New Jersey Devils – February 10, 2010.
We’ll see Simon Gagne again later on this list, but his game-winner against the New Jersey Devils on this night was disgusting. On top of that it came at a time when Philly was digging their way out from the bottom of the standings and working towards squeaking into the 2010 postseason.
16. Ruslan Fedotenko against the Washington Capitals – March 31, 2013.
Just like the 2014-15 season, the lockout-shortened 2013 campaign wasn’t much fun for the Flyers or their fans. After a fun 2011-12 season the Flyers underwhelmed with a roster that lacked skill before missing the postseason for just the second time in 18 seasons. However, one of those exciting moments was this overtime goal from Fedotenko. The game was tied at two early in the third period when Steve Oleksy put a big hit on Giroux, which evidently pissed off Jakub Voracek. He was called for an instigator and an instigator while wearing a visor, which allowed Washington to score a pair of power-play goals just 26 seconds apart to gain a 4-2 advantage with 13:12 left in regulation. As the final seconds were ticking off the clock in what had become a one-goal game, Kimmo Timonen ripped one by Braden Holtby with 9.5 seconds left to force overtime, where he set up Fedotenko for the winner.
15. Travis Konecny against the Detroit Red Wings – January 23, 2018.
Any time you can prove physics isn’t real to stay onside and laser home an OT winner you have to do it.
14. Claude Giroux against the Chicago Blackhawks – March 18, 2014.
Is this the best wrist shot in Giroux’s career? Not only that, this tally from The Captain came in a critical stretch for the Flyers as they needed points down the stretch to return to the postseason in 2014 after missing the year prior.
13. Mike Richards against the Boston Bruins – December 11, 2010.
Believe it or not this was the only overtime goal Mike Richards scored in the 2010’s.
12. Ivan Provorov against the Montreal Canadiens – November 30, 2019.
Ivan Provorov scored this goal less than a month ago, but in terms of the actual play and goal itself this might be the most impressive Flyers’ overtime goal of the decade. Of course that statement is debatable, but considering Provorov literally went end-to-end, showcased his skating abilities through the neutral zone, and deked between his legs while walking around the four Canadiens on the ice it has a pretty good case.
11. Scott Hartnell against the Pittsburgh Penguins – March 18, 2012.
As a Flyers’ fan it doesn’t get much better than watching Scott Hartnell stumble his way into pissing off the entire city of Pittsburgh. On this particular day Hartnell made sure the Penguins traveled home angry, as he somehow roofdaddied this shot on Fleury to tie the game early in the third period before going on to win it with 0.9 seconds left in overtime.
10. Shayne Gostisbehere against the Toronto Maple Leafs – February 20, 2016.
Gostisbehere’s insane point streak his rookie season would have only been 14 games long if not for this tally in the extra frame. A great backhanded pass by Voracek set up Gostisbehere for the 18th and final point of his memorable point streak during the 2015-16 campaign.
9. Claude Giroux against the Winnipeg Jets – March 28, 2016.
With the Flyers needing every point possible down the stretch during the close of the 2015-16 season, Gostisbehere and Giroux created an absolutely inexplicable goal at one of the most important moments of the campaign. Not only was Gostisbehere able to knock the puck away from an unsuspecting Mark Scheifele, he managed to have the presence of mind to put a stick on the puck to pass to Giroux rather than having the play end with a hand pass.
8. Claude Giroux against the Pittsburgh Penguins – February 23, 2019.
Like the Fedotenko goal in 2013 and Giroux goal in 2015, this was just something the Flyers and their fans needed last season. The 2018-19 season was an absolute nightmare from start to finish as a season of expected improvement went the exact opposite direction. Beating the Pens on the national stage in dramatic fashion in what turned out to be Simmonds’ final game as a Flyer makes this one of the team’s better OT goals of the decade.
7. Claude Giroux against the Boston Bruins – April 1, 2018.
Despite the fact he was overlooked as a Hart Trophy candidate, there wasn’t much more Giroux could have done to drag the 2017-18 Flyers into the playoffs. Nineteen of his 102 points that season came on a ten-game point streak to close out the regular season, including a hat trick in the regular season finale to help the Orange and Black secure a playoff spot. One of those 19 points down the home stretch was this beauty, which was his second goal of the game to start a string of four multi-point performances to close out the season. Again, not a Hart Trophy finalist because reasons.
6. Danny Briere against the New Jersey Devils – April 29, 2012.
If at first you don’t succeed just beat Martin Brodeur again. After having a goal disallowed for being kicked in earlier in the overtime, Briere decided he’d have to beat the former St. Louis Blue with a legal shot to take Game 1 of the 2012 Eastern Conference Semifinals against the New Jersey Devils.
5. Jakub Voracek against the Pittsburgh Penguins – April 11, 2012.
In what might have been the most entertaining playoff series of the 2010’s it was Voracek who completed the massive comeback to earn a Game 1 decision for the Flyers over the Pens in the 2012 Eastern Conference Quarterfinals. Voracek’s backhander on Fleury started the scoring play and his ability to pounce on a rebound while working past what I can only assume was a standing-while-sleeping Jordan Staal helped Philly steal one on the road. A series that featured the original reason for the offside challenge and Giroux’s shift resulted in the Flyers advancing to the second round with part of the reason being this goal.
4. Ville Leino against the Buffalo Sabres – April 24, 2011.
In overtime of a must-win Game 6 in the 2011 Eastern Conference Quarterfinals against the Buffalo Sabres Ville Leino pounded home a rebound created by Kris Versteeg to force the series back to Philly, where the Flyers took home Game 7 by a score of 5-2. There are a lot of elements in this video that make it seem fake (Versteeg doing something productive in a Flyers’ uniform, Leino scoring a goal in Buffalo, Ryan Miller playing in the playoffs), but it definitely happened.
3. Daniel Carcillo against the New Jersey Devils – April 18, 2010.
In his short time as a Flyer Daniel Carcillo provided a lot of memories for Philly fans. His best play as a member of the Orange and Black came in the 2010 postseason, as he quickly slammed home a loose puck in the crease before Brodeur had any idea where it was. On top of putting home a pivotal goal to help the Flyers beat the Devils in five games Carcillo produced one of the best post-goal reactions in awhile.
2. Simon Gagne against the Boston Bruins – May 7, 2010.
It isn’t his most memorable goal from the series, but the importance of Gagne’s game-winner can’t be understated. If he doesn’t win Game 4 for Philly there may not be an historic comeback or magical run to the Stanley Cup in 2010, which was the most exciting part about being a Flyers’ fan over the last ten years.
1. Claude Giroux against the Chicago Blackhawks – June 2, 2010.
The Flyers have won a total of two Stanley Cup Final games over the last 32, soon-to-be 33 years. This is one of them and it came off the stick of the team’s current captain. Considering the circumstances and the goal itself it’s no surprise this was the best overtime goal Philly has had over the last ten years.
