Claude Giroux tied Simon Gagne’s franchise record for overtime goals

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, no member of the Philadelphia Flyers has ever scored more than six regular season overtime goals for the team. Simon Gagne scored six over his 11 seasons with the Flyers, but that’s been about it.

Well, at least until last night. Claude Giroux’s third of the season was also his sixth career overtime winner. And since he’s spent his entire career with the Flyers, that means all six regular season overtime winners have come while wearing orange – and that’s a franchise record.

Next overtime winner G scores will set a new record for the Flyers. He’s now played 502 games for the team; Gagne ended up with 691. So Giroux will probably pass him at one point or another, and he’ll probably have required fewer games in which to do it, too.

And when Giroux sets that new franchise record, it’ll probably be just as awesome.
