Chris Therien has served the last six seasons in the Flyers radio booth alongside play-by-play broadcaster Tim Saunders. In 2014-15, he’ll make the transition to television.
The former Flyers defenseman, who played more games as a defenseman in orange and black than any other player ever, will join the Comcast SportsNet broadcast team this coming season, replacing Steve Coates as the team’s inside-the-glass ice level reporter. Coates will return to radio, where he previously served as color commentator next from 1991 to 1997. He made the move to TV in 1997 and served in that capacity for the last 16 seasons.
The rest of the TV crew stays the same: Jim Jackson is your play-by-play man and Bill Clement and Keith Jones will alternate as color commentator depending on Jones’ other responsibilities with NBC on national games.
2014-15 local broadcast schedule announced
In addition to announcing these changes, the Flyers and CSN unveiled their broadcast schedule for 2014-15. Here are the details, via the Flyers:
The Flyers will have 70 games televised locally in the Philadelphia market, with 61 airing on Comcast SportsNet and nine airing on The Comcast Network. The remaining 12 games will be exclusive national telecasts either on the NBC Sports Network (8) or NBC (4). Four of the Flyers’ eight preseason games will also be televised, with three appearing on The Comcast Network and one on CSN.
On the radio side, the Flyers are partnering with Greater Media for the third consecutive season to bring all preseason, regular season and playoff games to the Philadelphia market via FM radio. 97.5 FM The Fanatic will serve as the Flyers flagship again this season and will carry seven preseason games and 60 regular-season games. The remaining 22 games will air on 93.3 WMMR to avoid conflicts with Philadelphia 76ers radio broadcasts.
