All that talk about how the Philadelphia Flyers defense is getting old — ahem, Kimmo Timonen and Chris Pronger — and how the signings of Braydon Coburn and Matt Carle will have a huge influence on the future of the club?
Yeah, we can start talking about that sort of thing with a little more knowledge today. The Flyers announced that they’ve signed Coburn to a multi-year extension today, and Tim Panaccio reports that it’s a four-year deal worth $18 million. That’s a cap hit of $4.5 million, or a raise of $1.3 million against the cap in comparison to his current deal.
The extension doesn’t go into effect until next season, so this doesn’t impact the current season at all. Coburn was set to be an unrestricted free agent in July.
We’ll certainly have more later, but for now, what do you think of Coburn’s extension? And what do you think this means for Matt Carle? Carle makes $3.437 against the cap on his current deal, and you have to assume he’s going to get more than Coburn, right? …. right? Carle is also a free agent come July.
