As Charlie pointed out, scoring on the power play isn’t really something Brayden Schenn struggles with. He has 91 career NHL goals; 34 of them have come on the man advantage. He’s someone who simply does really, really well in that situation.
But no matter how often you score on the power play, it’s pretty rare to get a hat trick on it. Hat tricks in and of themselves are pretty hard to get, but Schenn’s was kinda special. Via the Elias Sports Bureau:
His power play hat trick was only the second one in the NHL over the last six seasons, with Shea Weber having scored three PPGs for Nashville in a game at Detroit just over a year ago (Dec. 5, 2015).
Elias also points out that Schenn is just the fourth Flyer in their 50 years of history to score a hat trick on the power play. He follows in the footsteps of Tim Kerr (who did it twice), Brian Propp, and Scott Hartnell. Hartnell’s, which came on Jan. 19, 2008, was the most recent: a 5-3 victory over the Islanders.
This is the second hat trick of Schenn’s career; his first came earlier this year on Feb. 29 against the Flames. Only one of his goals was on the power play then, though; the other two were at even strength.
