Adirondack Phantoms lose preseason opener, 5-3, to Albany Devils

Goalie prospect Niko Hovinen had a rough outing in his North American debut as the Adirondack Phantoms were topped by the Albany Devils, 5-3, in AHL preseason action at the Skate Zone in Voorhees Monday.

Hovinen faced 23 shots, playing the entire hockey game for the Phantoms. He was particularly rough early, allowing four goals on his first nine shots. The Phantoms led the game in total shot count throughout, ultimately finishing with a 47-23 advantage in that department, but it certainly seemed like Hovinen’s weak play stopped them from making this one competitive in the end.

Danny Syvret scored for the Phantoms in the first period. Matt Ford scored in the second period and Tye McGinn scored late in the third.

There are no further preseason games scheduled during Phantoms camp, so if you missed today’s game, you may not get a chance to see the Phantoms or Flyers locally for quite some time. Lockout depending, of course. The team is back on the Voorhees ice beginning Wednesday morning at 9 a.m.
