More cuts have been made in Philadelphia Flyers camp. Or, they will be happening when the rules allow it.
The waiver wire opens in the NHL on Friday at 12 p.m., and when that happens, the following players will be waived by the Flyers with the intention of sending them to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms.
- Forwards Tim Brent, Chris Conner and Aaron Palushaj
- Defenseman Davis Drewiske
- Goaltender Jason Labarbera
It’s expected that all five players will clear waivers and make it to the Phantoms, where new head coach Scott Gordon will have a deep veteran roster this season. All of these guys are veteran professional players with NHL experience and will be a nice mix with young prospects up in Allentown.
The Phantoms haven’t had a winning season since 2008-09, their last year in Philadelphia. Their season begins October 10.
Remaining in camp with the Flyers following these cuts are 11 defensemen, 17 forwards and just two goalies. Of those players, several are still fighting for jobs in the NHL. Chris Porter, Nick Cousins and Colin McDonald are three names that stand out at forward, while Shayne Gostisbehere and Brandon Manning are notable names on defense.
Defenseman Christian Marti, an offseason signing from the Swiss league, hasn’t played in camp due to injury. Ron Hextall says he expects Marti to be back in November, at which point he’ll probably report to the Phantoms. You can’t waive an injured player, so for now he remains on the Flyers as an injured non-roster player.
