PHILADELPHIA — Another game, another giant win for your Philadelphia Flyers. Tonight’s game, however, wasn’t another against some run-of-the-mill bottom feeder. The Ottawa Senators rolled into the Wells Fargo Center tonight as winners of seven of their last nine games.
The Flyers took that impressive mark and spit it back in their faces with their third big stomp in as many games, coming out on top this time by a 5-1 count.This is nothing to frown upon. Then again, with 18 goals in their last three games, it probably doesn’t matter which team they’re facing
Claude Giroux and Mike Richards continued their dazzling play tonight, each coming up with three points apiece. They connected on a crucial second period tally on what was actually a flubbed pass from Richards, but that’s just the way things are going for this team right now.
It’s not as if the win was really as simple as the game as the final score implies, though. Brian Elliott turned aside 39 Flyers shots and stifled them quite often in the first two periods. The Flyers really should have had the game wrapped up by the end of the second. They were controlling the play for about the entire game but really couldn’t seem to put the nail in the coffin. Elliott had a lot to do with that.
He turned aside 29 of those his 41 saves in the first two periods and really gave his team a strong chance to win the game. Unfortunately for the Senators, Sergei Bobrovsky was just as good down at the other end and ultimately, Elliott couldn’t hold off the Flyers offensive firestorm.
James van Riemsdyk returned to the lineup and looked like he had a bit of jump. He rang a shot off the post in the second period and seemed to ease himself back into the lineup with a decent game. It wasn’t the type of surge we expected from a guy who had been itching to get back into the lineup, but it looks like he’ll get a bigger chance in the next couple of weeks.
Dan Carcillo went down with a left knee injury in the third period. He limped off the ice and according to general manager Paul Holmgren, who addressed us after the game, he’ll miss at least two weeks with what appears to be an MCL strain. He’ll obviously undergo a bit more evaluation tomorrow as the team travels to Montreal.
There will be no call-up, at least for tomorrow night, meaning JVR will stay in the lineup and get a chance to continue to redeem himself. Luckily for the Flyers, they don’t need him to be an offensive juggernaut right now. They have plenty of those on the roster already.

- How does JVR look in his return to the lineup? He looked okay. He had some jump, but he wasn’t great or anything.
The Senators are an actual challenge compared to the rest of their recent competition. How do the Flyers match-up? The Flyers matched up very well.
Can the offensive machine keep churning? It most certainly can.
Any signs of fatigue from Bobrovsky? The first goal was shaky but overall, he was great as usual.
The power play has been scary-good at home lately. Do they keep that up? They were one for five. They could’ve and probably should’ve been a lot better.
