Now that the Flyers wear their white Winter Classic jerseys on the road for every game, they probably figured it’d be best to re-acquire the guy known for potting goals in those jerseys.
Danny Syvret, the defenseman who scored two goals in 21 games for the orange and black last year, one in the Winter Classic and one in a January game against Toronto where the Flyers wore the white, has made his triumphant return to the organization in an AHL-level trade with the Anaheim Ducks. The Flyers confirmed the deal via Twitter.
Syvret has played in eight NHL games this season, including one game here in Philadelphia against the Flyers, but he’s obviously spent most of his season in Syracuse with the Ducks AHL affiliate. Barring an injury with the Flyers, it’s unlikely Syvret actually gets called up to the big club any time soon, but he’ll certainly improve the defense up in Glens Falls.
Also making the move across upstate New York in the deal is 22-year-old left wing Rob Bordson. He’s in his first year of professional hockey after a year in the USHL and three years at the University of Minnesota at Duluth. Bordson was a point/game player in his final season at UMD, and he has three points in 15 AHL games this season. It’ll be interesting to see exactly where he falls in on the Phantoms depth chart alongside other college prospects Ben Holmstrom, Andrew Rowe and Mike Testwuide.

In open space with great finishers, he’s a skilled playmaker. His talent otherwise, at least at this weight and confidence level, is largely untested, but as a player who has recently recommitted himself to improving his game, you can’t assume he’s done improving.
The other angle to this deal of course is that Pat Maroon is finally out of the organization after a much-publicized falling out a few weeks ago. Many questioned whether or not Maroon had any trade value whatsoever after the Flyers basically said he was a terrible locker room presence, but the answer apparently is that, yeah, okay, we’ll take him, but you’re gonna give us something else too.
That something else is David Laliberte, the leading scorer among Phantoms forwards this season and a former injury call-up to the Flyers. He has some NHL potential and might even get a crack with the Ducks at some point this season — wouldn’t be surprised, at least — and he’ll make the Syracuse Crunch much deeper up front.
