Short recap tonight because my Internet hasn’t been cooperating over the last few days, but really, on a night like tonight, there’s no need to get really into the details of the game, right?
The Philadelphia Flyers, leaders of the Eastern Conference for most of the season, are officially playoff bound after surviving a late Dallas Stars surge and a penalty kill late in the third that carried into OT. Ville Leino’s shootout goal, mostly thanks to the over-aggressive play of Kari Lehtonen, ended a shootout that went several more rounds than it probably should’ve.
It wasn’t easy again for the Flyers, who led 2-0 before giving up two goals — one late in the second, one in the third — to the Stars. But in the end, they got the job done, and now we can officially look ahead to the playoffs, which are only three weeks away.
The remaining task at hand is clinching home ice and the first seed in the East, and the quest begins on Tuesday when the Flyers host the Washington Capitals. That game will be billed as the battle for the Eastern lead, nevermind the fact that the Caps have payed two extra games over the Flyers and still trail them by two points. Don’t starve the media of their storyline, damnit!
