Eric Wellwood called up by Philadelphia Flyers

Guess that James van Riemsdyk injury, healthy scratch, then injury again is really a relatively serious thing.

Eric Wellwood was called up from the Adirondack Phantoms late this afternoon, the team announced, and he’ll be eligible to play Saturday night against the Columbus Blue Jackets, who are bad at hockey.

Wellwood has eight points in eight games with the Phantoms so far this season. He’s able to fit in under the cap with his $580,000 cap hit rather easily. They now have $522,461 in room to work with under the salary cap, thanks to LTIR exemption, following Ben Holmstrom’s demotion yesterday and Wellwood’s call up today.

Harry Zolnierczyk is still with the team, and with Matt Read still out with an injury and now this new ailment to van Riemsdyk, another forward was necessary. Ben Holmstrom was sent down on Thursday prior to Danny Briere’s return to the lineup, and the roster once again stands at 23 players. Is your head spinning yet?

Seriously though, we’re making a trip to Glens Falls next weekend. What are the chances we’ll be watching a full Phantoms roster a week from tonight?
