Claude Giroux and Scott Hartnell are among the 12 NHL players who participated in a preview video (above) for a new equal rights campaign called You Can Play. They’ll be making their national debut during NBC’s coverage of Rangers vs. Bruins on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. The mission statement of the group, via their website:
You Can Play is dedicated to ensuring equality, respect and safety for all athletes, without regard to sexual orientation. You Can Play works to guarantee that athletes are given a fair opportunity to compete, judged by other athletes and fans alike, only by what they contribute to the sport or their team’s success. You Can Play seeks to challenge the culture of locker rooms and spectator areas by focusing only on an athlete’s skills, work ethic and competitive spirit.
Patrick Burke, a Flyers scout and the son of Maple Leafs general manager Brian Burke, is a co-founder of the organization, dedicated to carrying on the mission of his brother, Brendan Burke.
