Ilya Bryzgalov was pulled from the Russian national team roster days before the start of the Channel One Cup, an annual tournament held between several European nations. Reports indicated that he was sick and nothing else, but Russian publication Sport Express called Bryz to get the exact story.
The answer is quite possibly the greatest thing Bryzgalov has ever said. And Bryz has been known to say some incredible things.
Via Bill Meltzer, here’s the brief interview as run through Google Translate:
Why are not you on the team? You have really a health problem?
Sorry, but, unfortunately, I’m not ready to talk in detail with the press.
Why not?
The thing is that now I am in the Mission Control Center, you wrote about in our last interview. Astronaut suit on me. And you will understand that it disturbs me to communicate.
Bryzgalov can’t give an interview because he’s too busy being an astronaut. Or a cosmonaut, whatever. Never change, Bryz.
