Craig Berube’s hiring and Peter Laviolette’s firing wasn’t the only move made on Monday morning.
The Flyers have also let go assistant coach Kevin McCarthy, and that’s not shocking at all considering McCarthy was hired with Peter Laviolette back in 2009. With Berube being promoted and McCarthy leaving, that leaves two open spots behind the bench. Ian Laperriere and John Paddock will fill them.
Lappy formerly served as the Flyers director of player development, a role he’s had since retiring from the NHL a few years back. Paddock has served as an assistant coach, Phantoms head coach, director of player personnel and assistant GM in his time with the Flyers. He returns to the bench.
Joe Mullen, who’s been with the Flyers as an assistant since 2007, will remain as well. He’ll work games from the press box and will continue to work with the power play, the Flyers announced. Jeff Reese will remain as goaltending coach. Terry Murray, if you were wondering, will remain in his role as Phantoms head coach. No change there.
The Daily News reports that Kjell Samuelsson has been promoted to Lappy’s old job as director of player development, and that Derien Hatcher will serve as his right hand man. Hatcher and Samuelsson previously worked in that department under Laperriere.
