Fred Shero will live in the South Philadelphia Sports Complex forever. The Stanley Cup-winning former Flyers head coach will be memorialized with an 8-foot-tall statue outside Xfinity Live! at 11th Street and Pattison Avenue, beginning with a ceremony at 11 a.m. ET this coming Saturday, March 15.
The ceremony will take place two hours before the Flyers host the Pittsburgh Penguins. Fred’s son, Ray, is the general manager of the Penguins, who for the record are worst. Ray’s alright though.
Here’s what Ed Snider had to say about the ceremony:
Fred Shero was a great coach. He is the only Flyers coach to win a cup, and he won two! And no one will ever forget how he out coached the Russians. He took the players Keith Allen put together and used them perfectly, and was largely responsible for the legend of the ‘Broad Street Bullies.’ In my opinion, Freddie and the team were made for one another. This statue is a fitting tribute to one of the greatest members of the Flyers family of all time.
Shero passed away in 1990. He was inducted into the Flyers Hall of Fame that year, and after a far-too-long wait, was finally inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2013. He is the best, and this statue is a wonderful tribute.
The statue was designed and built by Fisher Designs of Moorestown, N.J. It took six months to build.
