Another game in which the Flyers blew a third period lead, and another game that needed extra time. For the ninth time this season a Flyers game went to overtime, and for the eight time it went to a shootout — that’s a ton of close games.
Following a snoozefest of a first period, the Flyers took it to the Flames in the second period, holding them to just seven shot attempts at 5-on-5 while taking 22 themselves. Jakub Voracek opened the scoring in the middle frame when a Travis Sanheim shot snuck through David Rittich, and Voracek found the puck in the blue paint.

And things were looking up! At this point the Flames had maybe one A-plus scoring chance, that being an Andrew Mangiapane rush chance just prior to Voracek’s goal, and while the Flyers’ offense wasn’t lighting it up, they were at least getting shots. Make no mistake, the Flyers were good in the second period, especially defensively.
The Flames would go on to tie the game in the third, when Mangiapane’s shot hit off of Philippe Myers and beat Carter Hart. It was their first goal in like 260 minutes or something. Ridiculous. Then Big Save Dave, who played a really good game, almost became Big Sieve Dave after getting caught behind his net on the Flyers’ second tally.

It was a great play by Joel Farabee, and a big goal for Kevin Hayes who has been in a bit of a funk this month. He has goals in back to back games, albiet both being “empty” net goals. One moreso than the other.
But of course the Flyers couldn’t hang on, that would just be too kind of them. The Flames tie it on — again — a good bounce. A Rasmus Andersson shot missed the net to Hart’s left, hit the boards, and bounced out directly to Elias Lindholm on Hart’s right. He made no mistake.
Both teams had a few decent chances in overtime, but they were forced to go to a shootout where the Flyers’ shooters (Farabee, Claude Giroux, and Sean Couturier) would go 0-for-3.
Answering the bell
1. Will the power play look dangerous again?
Not really. I don’t think it was one of the power play’s worst showings by any means, but I definitely wouldn’t describe their opportunities as dangerous. With Shayne Gostisbehere scratched, Travis Sanheim got a chance to play on the power play, and he was fine. On the other hand, the penalty kill was pretty great again.
2. Will Morgan Frost keep it going?
As far as points go, no. And he did have a turnover that led to a goal against. Still, it’s not as if he stood out in a bad way. He, like most of the team today, was fine. It would’ve been nice to see him in overtime or the shootout, but we’ll have to wait a little longer for him to be given those opportunities.
